Embracing openness: My approach to therapy

Speak in Confidence

Starting therapy can be a challenging step as it often involves confronting complex emotions and delving into past histories. As your counsellor, my role is to ensure that therapy feels like a safe space to you, a place where you can find emotional refuge and express your true self without fear of judgment.

In my practice, I emphasise a relational approach, focusing on the human connection between us. Respect, empathy and understanding are the essential pillars for our work together, as they help build trust and create a space where you can confidently explore your feelings and thoughts.

A Safe Space

As a person-centred counsellor, my aim is to make therapy a space where every part of who you are is acknowledged, valued, and respected

I believe that self-understanding and personal growth come not from protecting ourselves from pain but through openly exploring our underlying feelings. In our sessions, you will always feel supported and safe as we navigate your thoughts and emotions at a pace that feels right for you.

My approach is also sensitive to trauma, which means I’m careful to handle any past hurts without causing further distress. We’ll work to understand how these experiences affect you today and find ways to move forward.

Diversity Aware Counselling

As a counsellor committed to diversity, I understand how cultural background, identity, and life experiences shape our perceptions and emotional responses.

This approach ensures that you have a safe space to express yourself completely, within the full context of your culture, language, and beliefs.

I employ anti-oppressive practice, which means that I will respect your unique identity and experiences, ensuring that therapy is not only safe but also empowering, recognising the impact of societal structures and cultural influences on personal experiences in ways that promote your well-being and growth.

Make better, healthier choices

Together, we will look at the patterns in your beliefs and behaviours, understanding how they influence your life now. We will turn these insights into opportunities, empowering you to move forward with more confidence and clarity.

I offer a free 20-minute conversation call. This conversation will help us determine your needs and whether my approach could be beneficial for you.

Please note that counselling is not intended for crisis situations or urgent needs. If you need immediate help, please contact Samaritans on 116 123, or go to your nearest A&E Department. You can also text SHOUT to 85258 to chat by text at any time.

About Me

Pedro Garcia (He/Him)

Empathetic and Diversity-aware Counselling

London, Greenwich, E14 & surrounding areas, as well online, phone and email.

Hola! I am Pedro, originally from the vibrant city of Barcelona, Spain. Ten years ago, I found my second home in London, where I have been embracing and contributing to the diverse tapestry of this dynamic city.

I am a qualified counsellor trained in the Person-Centred Approach and accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). In addition to my core training, I have completed numerous continuing professional development (CPD) courses, with a particular focus on trauma, anti-oppressive practices, and diversity. This has equipped me to offer effective support to clients from a wide range of backgrounds.

Pedro Garcia - Diversity Aware Counselling in Greenwich & Waterloo

Throughout my career, I have been deeply committed to supporting diverse communities. I have collaborated closely with charities helping families affected by child sexual abuse and have provided tailored support to migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, helping them to navigate the complexities of their circumstances and build resilience.

I am actively engaged in initiatives that promote diversity, enhance mental health support for the LGBTQAI+ community, and support wellbeing in workplaces in London. My commitment extends beyond advocacy, as I incorporate these principles into my counselling practice, believing strongly in a multicultural approach that upholds the values of diversity

With a background in Fine Arts, I bring a creative essence to the core of my counselling methods. Working together, you can expect to engage in a therapeutic process that not only supports your individual journey but also connects you with broader narratives of strength and resilience.

I offer counselling sessions online, by email, over the phone, or in-person to best accommodate your preferences. My welcoming counselling rooms are conveniently located in Greenwich town centre, right next to the Cutty Sark DLR station, and in Waterloo, just a 10-minute walk from Waterloo station

Before you explore the FAQs, I want to assure you that no question is too small or insignificant. Your enquiries matter. If you don't find your question listed below, or if you require further information, please don't hesitate to reach out. You can easily connect with me through the ‘Contact’ section.

What does work within diversity mean?

Diversity aware counselling incorporates cultural sensitivity into therapy, ensuring that cultural context and experiences are fully respected and understood within the counselling process. This connection allows for more effective communication and a deeper, more meaningful therapeutic experience.

It recognises the importance of race, gender, sexual orientation, culture, beliefs, values, attitudes, religion and language and considers external realities such as racism, sexism, and physical health, ensuring a holistic approach to your care.

Working within diversity opens the door to empowerment and navigating life’s complex roles. Whether you are dealing with personal challenges like trauma, seeking acceptance, or navigating complex relationships, my approach is supportive and culturally sensitive, helping you to explore these areas at your own pace.

I am not LGBTQAI+ or part of a minority group, can I still take counselling with you?

Absolutely! As a multicultural counsellor, I embrace diversity and welcome clients from all walks of life. My practice is inclusive and provides a supportive environment for everyone.

Can I have therapy in Spanish?

Of course! I offer therapy sessions in English, Spanish, and Catalan. You are welcome to choose the language that feels more comfortable for you, ensuring your therapy experience is as supportive and effective as possible.

What should I expect from therapy?

Every person’s experience in therapy is unique, influenced by their individual goals and commitment. You may learn to embrace your vulnerabilities, feel more empowered, gain a deeper understanding of yourself, face challenges constructively, or develop greater compassion for yourself and others. The outcomes would depend on your personal journey and what you hope to achieve through therapy.

Can I have a call to discuss my case with you?

Yes, I offer a free 20-minute consultation. This is an opportunity for us to learn a bit more about each other and for you to see if you feel comfortable working with me. Please note, this is an introductory conversation, not a counselling session.

How long does therapy usually last?

The duration of therapy depends on your specific needs and circumstances. Initially, we will discuss a provisional timeline, which we can adjust as necessary. I offer:

  • Short-term counselling for specific issues, typically ranging from 3-15 sessions.
  • Long-term, open-ended therapy, for those who wish to explore deeper or long-standing challenges.
What’s your cancellation policy?

You can cancel or reschedule an appointment by giving at least 48 hours' notice. If you cancel with less than 48 hours' notice, you will be charged for the session.

How can I book a session with you?

Booking a session is simple! You can reach out through the 'Contact' section of the website with your availability. I aim to respond within 48 hours.

How do I prepare for my first therapy session?

Preparing for your first therapy session can help you feel more confident and grounded. Here are a few tips to get started:

1. Reflect on Your Goals: Think about what you hope to achieve through therapy. It can be helpful to write down a few goals or areas of concern you want to address. This doesn't have to be in-depth—a general idea can guide the initial conversations.

2. Prepare Questions: If you have any questions about the therapy process, confidentiality, or my approach, write them down so you can ask during the session.

3. Choose a Comfortable Setting: If your session is online, find a quiet, private space where you won’t be interrupted. Ensure your internet connection is stable to avoid technical issues.

4. Mental Preparation: It’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous before your first session. Take some time to relax and calm your mind. Some deep breathing, meditation, or a walk can help settle any pre-session nerves.

5. Be Open: Try to approach the session with openness. The more honest you can be about your feelings and experiences the more helpful therapy will be for you.
